Chapter Eleven

“What do you think, Zuma? Huh? Youve got no opinions? No wise ear twitches to pass along?” Tyler ran his hand affectionately along the horses flank. “No of course not—they gelded you, didnt they? You lucky bastard.”

A clang in the barn aisle made Tyler wince. His head was punishing him for the night before, but at least his stomach was all right. It was a good thing he hadnt gotten into the scotch at Marks hotel room. Maybe the only smart thing hed done the whole night, not getting drunker. Still, he was having a hard time convincing himself that he regretted spending time with Mark. It had been intense, the whole night together. After all, Mark and Tyler had hooked up first. The thing with Alistair had been—well, it had been a mistake, probably, but Tyler was having just as much trouble regretting him as he was Mark. The whole situation was complicated and strange, but it was over now, with both of them. Tyler just needed to work on accepting that. He needed to think of the night before as saying good-bye to both of them, because he wasnt strong enough to let himself bounce back and forth between them, knowing it meant too much to him and too little to them.

“Life experiences, right, Zoom? Like, for you, maybe you should have been a bit more careful out in that field and not fallen down or gotten kicked or whatever the hell you did to yourself. But, if youd never been hurt, you never would have learned how much you like slings. Or any of the tricks you know. They would have kept making you race, probably, even though you were doing your best to let them know that it wasnt your thing. So, really—fingers crossed that you dont founder tomorrow—this has all been okay for you, right?” The horse nodded even though Tyler hadnt given him the signal, and Tyler smiled sadly. At least he was convincing the animal, if not himself. “Yeah. Pain is temporary—experience is forever. Right, buddy?” Zuma nodded again, but this time he tossed his head in the direction of the aisle. Tyler realized they had an audience. “Oh. Hi.” It was a teenage girl, no one Tyler recognized. “Can I help you?”

“Im looking for Alistair Wilson. He works here?”

“Uh, yeah, hes one of the owners. But hes not here right now, I dont think. Did you check in the office first?” “It was closed. Locked. Youre the only person Ive been able to find.” The girl sounded aggravated by the entire situation, like the barn was closed early on a Saturday morning just to inconvenience her.

“Sorry, I dont work here. I dont know what their schedules are. Does it have to be Dr. Wilson who helps you?”

“Helps me? No, Im not here looking for any help from that man.” She sounded like a forty-year-old woman, Tyler decided. An annoying forty-year-old woman. “Okay. Well, I dont think I can help you either. Maybe you should call ahead, set up an appointment.
